What is El Niño?

Simply put, it’s a climate phenomenon where sea surfaces periodically warm in the central and eastern sections of the Pacific Ocean. It’s something that happens roughly every 2-7 years. Although El Niño occurs in the Pacific Ocean, the impact is far-reaching and affects much of the US, including the Northeast. 

There’s a lot that happens during El Niño, but long story short, it influences weather patterns and heavily affects temperatures and rainfall. While there’s minimal impact during the summer, El Niño becomes much more pronounced during the fall and winter. And that’s what we’re interested in.   

El Niño’s Potential Impact on Ski Season

Again, El Niño doesn’t guarantee snowier-than-average conditions during ski season, and there are other factors involved, but it can certainly affect it. More specifically, it can lead to colder temperatures and produce more snowfall, especially in mountainous areas, which is good news for skiing, snowboarding, and other winter activities. According to Climate.gov, there’s a 95% chance that it will last through the entire winter, and a 70% chance that it will at least be a “strong event.” While there are no guarantees that it will produce more snowfall than usual in the Northeast, conditions look promising for an excellent ski season.
